Total-factor productivity (TFP) is a variable which accounts for effects in total output not caused by inputs. For example, a year with unusually good weather will tend to have higher output, because bad weather “hinders agricultural output. A variable like weather does not directly relate to unit inputs, so weather is considered a total-factor productivity variable. Conceptually, total factor productivity refers to how efficiently and intensely inputs are used in the production process. Total factor productivity (TFP) is sometimes referred to as "multi-factor productivity," and, under certain assumptions, can be thought of as a measure of level of technology or knowledge.

The total productivity is measured by the rapoort between the units produced and the market value of all assets necessary to produce them. Productivity in value added is the difference between the value of what is produced and the cost of purchased material. this difference is equal to the sum of the contribution of labor and more capital the benefit if there is one or less loss if there is one. A simple guide to multi-factor productivity explains the concept and measurement of multi-factor productivity through simple stylised examples (published 5 October 2018). Quarterly UK public service productivity (Experimental Statistics): October to December 2018 contains the latest experimental estimates for quarterly UK total public service productivity, inputs and output (published 5 April Solow Residual: A measure of the empirical productivity growth in an industry or macroeconomy over comparable time periods, such as from year to year and decade to decade. The measure is deemed Total Factor Productivity (hereinafter TFP) Labor productivity measures output per employed worker or, if working hours can be measured (mostly only in mature economies), output per hour worked. At country level, output is typically measured as the economy’s Gross Domestic Product (at sector level called value added) adjusted for inflation.
Total factor productivity may be measured by A subtracting the rate of growth from ECON 362A at Binghamton University clearly increase total factor productivity.” (Law: 6&7) This quote says that TFP measures all improvements in technology, including such things as the introduction of electricity and the motorcar. The index measures productivity per worker, which can be found by dividing the value added by the total number of staff on the payroll.

Relation between Solow Residual and total factor productivity. Growth accounting is a procedure used in economics to measure the contribution of different factors to economic growth and to indirectly compute the rate of technological progress, measured as a residual, in an economy.
A large fraction of observed difference in incomes among countries cannot be explained by easily measured production factors. This indicates that there are other factors that influence productivity or income levels which are often ignored. We use firm-level data for the period 2010-2013 to estimate total factor productivity in the South African manufacturing sector. We examine differences in the level and growth of produc-tivity across manufacturing subsectors and examine the heterogeneity in productivity levels within sectors.
